The Penguin atlases are designed to be read as a story, following the sweep of history as technologies and trade develop, whole peoples appear, political and military leaders maneuver, all on a stage with fixed boundaries: most of the maps show the same (very large) area at different times.

There are more of these than I’ve read. Some have been released in newer editions, too, so the list above includes copyright dates for the ones I’ve used.
