Brewing Under the Sink

These two recipes were in the same plastic sleeve. I guess Dad was into home brewing for a time.

Kahlua Under the Sink

I always thought of this as my father's recipe, but according to the card, my mother's cousin Averil Jean wrote it out when she was visiting in May 1969. Averil Jean was the daughter of Gramma Moore's older sister Isabella. This recipe is part of family legend. Can't say I recommend the result.

  • 2 cup water (see note below)
  • 2 ounces instant coffee
  • 4 cup water
  • 2 cup cheap brandy
  • 1 vanilla bean

Boil water. Mix sugar and coffee. Add boiling water. Cool; add brandy. Pour into a half-gallon glass wine bottle. Drop in vanilla bean.

Let stand 30 days under the sink.

Yes, water is listed twice and sugar is not listed at all. I would use 2 cups of sugar and 4 cups of water.

Rice Wine

  • 3 gallons water
  • 1 pound sugar
  • 4 1/2 pounds rice
  • 2 pounds seeded raisins
  • 1 pound seedless raisins
  • 1 orange, skin and juice
  • 1 yeast cake

Boil and cool the water. Mix everything together.

Stir once a day, 21 or 24 days. Then strain and use.

These days almost all raisins come without seeds. Use a mix of dark and golden raisins.
