In memory of Vanita Klotz Hicks, Aunt Sue,
October 27, 1932 to August 8, 2024
Introduction
Quite some time ago, Aunt Sue gave me a small collection of letters containing recipes to pass on to Marti. At that time, I was thinking about putting my mother's recipes online and I wanted to add these too, so I hung on to them. Mom's recipes have been on the web for a while. Sadly, I didn't get these published until after Aunt Sue had passed. Here they are, with, with apologies to Marti for hanging on to the originals for so long. I think the recipes in the original gift are the ones Aunt Sue could bear to part with at the time. On a much later visit, she gave me her recipe book, along with a stack of loose recipes and a couple cookbooks. I've pulled the family recipes out of the stack and added them here.
One thing I discovered is that when the women in my family didn't have much news to send, they filled their letters with recipes. I've included scans of complete letters when I had them. The recipes themselves come in a variety of formats, depending on the contributor. I have edited them into a more or less standard form with the ingrediants list first. Where I thought the directions were confusing, I've added my own notes in italics to distinguish them from the sender's comments. Many of the recipes have not been tested recently. Where I have used them, I sometimes include my revised recipe.
More about Aunt Sue
Who are all these women?
By the way, if anyone in the family would like to see what's in the whole collection, or if anyone wants to preserve family heritage, let me know and I’ll happily send it on, all the better if bits go to multiple people. Sometimes I feel like I'm trying to give away kittens or zucchini, but I don't have the heart to just throw it out.
