Date Nut Bread

From Joyce Wycoff, our next door neighbor in Chester. The recipe is on the back of an envelope postmarked Dec. 12, 1960.

• ½ pound dates, cut up
• 1½ cup boiling water
• 2 teaspoon baking soda
• *******
• 2¼ cup flour
• ¼ teaspoon baking powder
• 1 egg
• 1 teaspoon melted shortening
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 cup nuts
• 1 cup sugar

Add the dates and baking soda to boiling water. Let the date mixture sit while you measure out dry ingredients, then mix together. Bake at 325º for 1 hour. Good luck.
