This is from a mimeographed flyer, we think from 4-H. The directions will make a heart-shaped red velvet cake for Valentine's Day.
Cream shortening and 1 cup of the sugar till light. Add vanilla, and egg yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Sift together dry ingredients. Add to creamed mixture alternately with cold water, beating after each addition.
Beat egg whites till soft peaks form, gradually add ¼ cup sugar, beating till stiff peaks form. Fold into batter, blend well.
Bake in greased pans (1 square, 1 round) at 350º for 35–40 minutes.
Cut the round cake in half. Position the halves on two adjacent sides of the square cake to make a heart shape.
Jill adds: Ice with a pink-tinted cream cheese or butter cream icing.
