As the contents of the Bible varies among denominations, this index takes an expansive view. Notes below describe the status of works not in the Protestant canon.

For simplicity, this index is alphabetical using only:

  • book names, in simplest common form; and
  • traditionally credited authors.
Books not represented by quotes and notes appear in the two structural indexes, but not here.

Notes

  1. The non-canonical Apocalyptic Esdras (2 Esdras in the Protestant Apocrypha, 4 Esdras in the Vulgate, and 3 Esdras in the Slavonic Bible) is not in the Greek Bible.
  2. Deuterocanonical in the Catholic and the Greek and Russian Orthodox Bibles: Tobit, Judith, Baruch, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus (the Wisdom of Jesus ben Sirach), and I and 2 Maccabees.
  3. Some early Bibles contained additional Christian writings such as the Epistle of Barnabas and The Shepherd of Hermas.
  4. Deuterocanonical in the Greek and Russian Orthodox Bibles: the Prayer of Manasseh, 3 Maccabees, and the book variously called I [Protestant], 2 [Slavonic], or 3 [Vulgate] Esdras or Esdras A [Greek].
  5. The non-canonical 4 Maccabees is an appendix to the Greek Bible.
