Corned Beef and Cabbage

Wash corned beef well. Place in kettle of water to cover and boil with bay leaf and onion, into which cloves have been stuck, for one hour. Remove beef and pour off water. Pour bubbling water over meat and add vinegar and brown sugar. Boil 2 hours. Add potatoes, cabbage head cut into quarters, and scraped carrots. Cook ½ hour.
