Celtic knotwork squareKlotz Family Recipes

Begun in honor of the 90th birthday of Grace Averil Klotz, May 12, 2020

Grace Hyler, 1949. This portrait was a Christmas present to Carl Klotz, with the note "Someday I'll come in person to stay."

Introduction

This project began when my mother (Grace Klotz) gave me a recipe book that belonged to her Aunt Averil Adams. In 2001, I printed a book of those recipes for my nieces and nephews. Then in 2013, I transcribed recipes in my mother's box. That was the basis for this website, although it took me until 2020 to actually get it online. In the meantime, my father's sister Aunt Sue (Vanita Hicks) gave me a folder of some family recipes and Mom gave me another recipe box. She might have told me who it came from, but I forgot, and when I asked her, she didn't remember either. In addition, after Mom's death and as Aunt Sue was passing things on to the next generations, I wound up with a disorganized wealth of family papers and pictures. In 2024 I undertook a major revision and expansion into four main sections:

Additional Sources

open book and question markMystery Box: These are recipes from the Jeff's family, most likely Aunt Averil. I don't intend to transcribe the whole box, but I've added some relevant ones to Averil's section.

Celtic dragon's head Jill's research: I've looked up some things that puzzled me and I've added some of my own recipes or adaptations where it seemed relevant. My notes are either in italics or marked with a dragon's head icon.

crabCarol's Boxes: Carol has Mom's and (I think) Gramma Moore's boxes. We went through them in September 2024, and I scanned a number of recipes that seemed to belong with Grace's box. I've added in Carol's comments. She has also developed a number of her own recipes, but those are another project.

turtleHal's Cooking: When I was working full-time, Hal pretty much took over the kitchen. A few of his adaptions show up here.

dancing starMost of the recipes are in the section they came from, but there were so many from Grace's box that I put some of them with related recipes in other sections. When a recipe is out of its original section, or when it comes from an additional source, I mark it with the appropriate icon.

What's Next?

This is probably as far as I will go with historical recipes. There's still some work to do with the other family history, but I'm not sure what form that will take. Likely there will be more added to the Family Memories/History section.

Mostly now I am hoping to pass things on. Along with the things I'm posting in the Facebook group, I plan to add to this site a page of treasures looking for good homes.

I hope you have as much fun poking through the recipes as I did putting them together.
